Claudio Arrau gives full scope to Brahms' epic speech. He imposes his playing as an absolute model of Brahmsian authenticity. His singing is of a rare emotion, the poetic intuition is permanent.Claudio Arrau is of an unequalled nostalgia. He is supported by Giulini who is of a great expressive and stylistic beauty, he makes the luminosity of each theme sensitive by a sovereign balance between rhythmic base and eloquence of the melody.

Das WDR Sinfonieorchester und Geiger Augustin Hadelich spielen Johannes Brahms‘ Konzert D-Dur für Violine und Orchester op. 77 unter der Leitung von Cristian Măcelaru, live aufgenommen am 15. Februar 2020 in Kölner Philharmonie.

Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor, Op. 37 is generally thought to have been composed in 1800, although the year of its composition has been questioned by some contemporary musicologists. It was first performed on 5 April 1803, with the composer as soloist. During that same performance, the Second Symphony and the oratorio Christ on the Mount of Olives were also premiered. The composition was published in 1804, and was dedicated to Prince Louis Ferdinand of Prussia. The first primary theme is reminiscent of that of Mozart's 24th Piano Concerto.
Structure:
The concerto is scored for 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets in B♭, 2 bassoons, 2 horns in E♭, 2 trumpets in C, timpani, strings and piano soloist.
As is standard for Classical/Romantic-era concertos, the work is in three movements: Allegro con brio, Largo, Rondo. Allegro - Presto

Johannes Brahms (1833 - 1897) was a German composer, pianist, and conductor of the mid-Romantic period. Born in Hamburg into a Lutheran family, he spent much of his professional life in Vienna. He is sometimes grouped with Johann Sebastian Bach and Ludwig van Beethoven as one of the "Three Bs" of music, a comment originally made by the nineteenth-century conductor Hans von Bülow.
Brahms composed for symphony orchestra, chamber ensembles, piano, organ, voice, and chorus. A virtuoso pianist, he premiered many of his own works. He worked with leading performers of his time, including the pianist Clara Schumann and the violinist Joseph Joachim (the three were close friends). Many of his works have become staples of the modern concert repertoire.
Brahms has been considered both a traditionalist and an innovator, by his contemporaries and by later writers. His music is rooted in the structures and compositional techniques of the Classical masters. Embedded within those structures are deeply Romantic motifs.

“My enthusiasm for Brahms goes back to my youth, and the piano concertos are largely responsible for it,” writes Sir András Schiff in a liner note for this remarkable new recording. It finds the great pianist reassessing interpretive approaches to Brahms in the inspired company of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. To fully bring out the characteristics of Brahms’s music Schiff’s choice of instrument is a Blüthner piano built in Leipzig around 1859, the year in which the D minor concerto was premiered. The historically informed Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment plays with the flexibility, attitude, and responsiveness of a chamber music ensemble, as they work without a conductor, listening attentively to each other. András Schiff’s collaboration with the orchestra in a series of concerts was widely acclaimed: “Brahms’s First Piano Concerto was reborn thanks to the OAE’s incisive playing and András Schiff’s characterful phrasing”, The Guardian exclaimed. The musicians’ mutual wish to recapture the experience led to the present double album, recorded in London in December 2019. An extensive CD booklet includes liner notes by András Schiff and Peter Gülke in English and German.
